5 Top Tips to Get You Upgraded on Flights

July 3rd, 2009
Comments Off

For most airline passengers, paying up to $5000 or more for a business class ticket in order to fly in greater comfort is not affordable.  However, what very few people realize is that most airlines will occasionally upgrade passengers from economy class for free - if they meet certain criteria.

In this article, I will pass on some of the things that the check in staff look for and require so that you can take advantage of the loopholes and get your upgrade for free.  These five top tips are the ones mentioned by the ticket agents of some of the best-known airlines, and are considered by many regular travellers to be the holy grail of getting something for nothing.

Tip Number 1:

Look the part.

Make sure that you are presentable when you travel.  There is very little or no chance of getting upgraded if you are wearing shorts and a scruffy t-shirt, so at the very least, check in wearing a shirt and pants.  There is no need to overdo it and wear a suit - unless you really want to.  The key is to look well dressed, but not overdoing it.

Tip Number 2:

Check in early.

The ticket personnel already know how many passengers are travelling on a particular flight well in advance, so if there are seats to spare in first class, they will know right away.

Tip Number 3:

Be Polite.

What if you were the ticket agent.  Would you reward a person who gives  a hard time, or someone who is friendly and polite.  There may be 250 people in the line behind you, so make them remember you.  Flirt, smile, use their name, be nice, and you may well get a pleasant surprise.

Tip Number 4:

Be a Frequent Flier.

If you join an airline’s frequent flier program, you have a much better chance to be at the front of the line for an upgrade as the airline will want to repay you for your loyalty.  Even if you are not a frequent flier, go to the airline’s website and join their program online.  It doesn’t take very long and is will really increase your upgrade chances.

Tip Number 5:

Ask.

As they say that if you don’t ask for something, you won’t get it, so make sure you ask - but do it at the right time.  If the check in staff look stressed, and they haven’t responded to your nice guy approach, don’t ask them for an upgrade, wait until you get to the gate.  If the gate attendants are impressed with your demeanor, when they ask you if you want a particular seat number, be cheeky and say “Business Class” to them.  It could be your lucky day!

How to Get Free Upgrades

For many travellers, paying up to $5000 or more for a business class ticket in order to fly in greater comfort is not affordable.  However, what not many people realize is that many air carriers will sometimes upgrade passengers from economy class for free - if they meet certain guidelines.

In this article, I will pass on some of the things that the check in staff look for and require so that you can take advantage of the loopholes and get placed in first class at no cost to you.  These five top tips are the ones mentioned by the check in staff of some of the best-known airlines, and are considered by many regular travellers to be the best chance you have of getting something for nothing.

Tip Number 2:

Check in early.

The check-in staff know exactly how many passengers are scheduled to fly well in advance, so if there are seats to spare in first class, they will know right away.

Tip Number 3:

Be Polite.

Put yourself in the place of the check in staff.  Would you reward a person who gives  a hard time, or someone who is friendly and polite.  There may be 250 people in the line behind you, so make them remember you.  Flirt, smile, use their name, be nice, and you may well win the upgrade contest.

Tip Number 4:

Be a Frequent Flier.

If you belong to an airline’s frequent flier program, you are far more likely to be at the front of the line for an upgrade as the airline will want to reward you for your loyalty.  Even if you do not fly regularly, go to the airline’s website and sign up for their program online.  It will only take a minute or two and is will really increase your upgrade chances.

Tip Number 5:

Ask.

As they say nothing ventured, nothing gained, so make sure you ask - but do it at the right time.  If the check in staff look stressed, and no amount of charm has elicited a smile, don’t ask them for an upgrade, wait until you get to the gate.  If the gate attendants have responded well, when they ask you if you have any specific seat request, be cheeky and say “Business Class” to them.  It could be your lucky day!

Breeze Through Airport Secuity Lines

July 1st, 2009
Comments Off

No matter where you plan to travel, there are security lines in almost all airports in the world now.  Some folks may not fly very often, and consequently are not prepared for the security check process.  If you want to get through those lines like the frequent flyers do, there are a few tricks that will make it faster for you and everyone around you.  Think beforehand, so you’re not doing all of this just as you get to the front of the line.

Take any loose change out of your pockets .  Cell phones and billfolds should go into one of those little trays they provide also.  Remember heavy watches, bracelets, and belt buckles can set of the alarm. Take those off and stow them in your carry-on bag before you get to the head of the line or place them in the trays.

Organize books and goodies so you won’t have so much to gather back together once you’ve made it through the line.

In the United States, you have remove your shoes.  Slip-on shoes will be easier to take off and put back on.  Shoes with zippers and laces will slow you down…but have your shoes untied or unzipped before you get to the front of the line.  (Take care when you put them back on that you don’t trip on your laces and fall on your face!)

Have your one quart/one liter plastic bag with your liquids, creams and gels in your hands and put it in a bin.  Remember each liquid should be 3 ounces/100 ml or less, right?  Don’t any loose liquids in your carry-on luggage.  In most countries, if you have “medically necessary” liquids or baby food, , those can exceed your plastic bag allowance, but you must notify a screening officer.

Have a plan when you put your stuff into bins on the screening belt.  If you put things through the screening in the right order, you’ll be able to put yourself back together faster afterward.  Here’s a good way to do this.

Put you shoes, coat and your carry-on “personal item” (usually your smaller bag) in the first bin.   They will pass through the x-ray first, so you can put them back on while you’re waiting for your other items to be screened.

If you have a computer, put your laptop case in the bin before your computer, so when your computer comes through, you’ll have the laptop bag ready to slip the computer right into it.

If it’s going to take you a long time to put your shoes back on, collect all of your belongings and move out of the way so you don’t slow up the line.  There are usually a few chairs against a wall nearby where you can sit down and put yourself back together.

You will irritate the other passengers AND the screening officers if you stand there and put your shoes on…. leaving your bin on the screening belt while others back up behind yours.  Airports report that about half of all security check slowdowns are caused by people putting themselves together after screening without moving to the side…. don’t be that inconsiderate person!

You’re going to read this, and the next time you travel, you’re going to move through that security screening with a plan… and they’ll think you’re an expert traveler no matter whether you are a frequent flyer or not.  Plan your trip through the security checks as completely as you plan your vacation.

Airfare Discounts

July 1st, 2009
Comments Off

Finding airfare discounts is a common mission that is on any traveler s mind If you are traveling as a group or as a family, you will most certainly hope to receive a good airfare discounts rate. But is that something feasible to hope for??

In most cases, airlines offer discounts during times where they lose businesses. In other words, you will find airlines offering airfare discounts during non-tourist seasons in certain countries. In other unusual occasions, airlines announce special discounts during company celebrations. For e.g. The XYZ airline may offer discounts in marking their 25th anniversary in the trade.

However, destiny is not the only factor that makes you entitled for airfare discounts. Certain credit card offers too, make you suitable for airfare discounts under decided conditions. These terms are not always bad compared to other offers that you may come across on the internet.

The bottom line is very clear when it comes to receiving dirt cheap airfare discounts. If the discount is given by the airline to the traveler, then it can be considered safer than you as the traveler being promised by a travel agent about airfare discounts that you may receive. The main reason why promises from travel agents can be broken is because they are not the ones who are determining the airfare discounts. Usually what happens is that the airline that you choose will have an understanding with the travel agent to provide discounts if they book a certain number of seats. The percentage of airfare discounts will certainly depend on the agreement they have with one another. Therefore, it is possible for travel agents to offer whichever amount they wish, for the end customer; that is you! This is why you see minor differences in the rates offered by different travel agents.

When you are arranging for your cheap family vacations be mindful about how you are receiving airfare discounts and from whom. After all, figures are not the only thing to worry about in business dealings nowadays. You should also check whether your online payment goes through a secure gateway to ensure you are entrusting your credit card details with trusted sources. And lastly but not in the very least, you should check up on every single detail associated with your discounted airfare in order to avoid late disappointments!

The Benefits Of Choosing A Cheap Caribbean Cruise

June 30th, 2009
Comments Off

The people that have chosen to take a cheap vacation in the near future may want to consider traveling on a cheap Caribbean cruise for their vacation.  There are numerous benefits that can be realized by choosing a cheap Caribbean cruise for the vacation that many people do not think about when planning their vacation.  The best cruises are not always determined by the price of the cruise and people may find that paying less for a cheap cruise package can save them a lot of money, leaving more money to spend on other things for their vacation.

More Money For Other Expenditures

One of the biggest benefits of choosing a cheap Caribbean cruise for your vacation is the amount of money that you will be saving for other aspects of your vacation, such as shore excursions and entertainment.  There are often many different things to do and see in the ports that the cruise will be visiting and spending less money by choosing a cheap Caribbean cruise can give you more options for what to do when you are not on the cruise ship. Many people make the mistake of choosing an expensive cruise for their vacation because of the comfort level of the cruise and fail to realize that spending so much of their money on the cruise will limit the number of places that they can go and what they can experience on the budget that they are limited to.

More Ports Of Call

A cheap Caribbean cruise will often travel to more locations during the cruise than a traditional cruise that may only travel to one or two major island cities.  The number of places that the cruise ship will travel to is very important for the experience because there will be a bigger chance that you will see things that you have never seen before and you will spend more time experiencing different cultures instead of looking at waves over the side of the ship.  The owners of the cruise line offering the cheap Caribbean cruise will list the ports of call for each type of cruise on their website so that the person will be able to see which cruises go to the areas that they are interested in visiting.

Service From The Staff

The service that is available for cruise lines offering a cheap Caribbean cruise is often the same as the service that you would receive on a more expensive cruise line.  These Caribbean cruises are operated just like a typical cruise and the only difference from a more traditional cruise is the price of the cabin on the ship.  Having good service while on vacation is one of the best benefits of choosing a cheap Caribbean cruise.

What To Look For When Seeking Your Luxury Cruises

discount cruise travel deals

Taking a cruise vacation is more popular than ever and if you are ready to move cruising off the “to-do” list and into reality, then you should take some time to review the various information about cruises before making those reservations. Sometimes, all of the available choices can be bewildering because there are so many to consider. You will need to choose the cruise line, the size of the ship you prefer, the category of cabin, and the duration of your voyage. Then you will need to determine if your finances will keep you afloat.

The major cruise lines visit about 1,800 different ports that span the globe, and not all of these ports will be places that you’ll be interested in visiting. Because there are so many destinations, the first thing to do is decide which ones hold the most interest. For instance, you can focus on Caribbean or Mexican cruises if you are looking for warmth and sunshine, or you can go for the scenery and whale watching possibilities of an Alaskan or Antarctic cruise. Once you have narrowed down the general area that you want to cruise to, then you can more easily make your final decision.

The cruise lines have a wide variety of offers for different lengths of cruises. You can get away for a long weekend for a 3- or 4-day voyage, for a week, or choose an itinerary of ten days that usually encompasses two weekends. These shorter trips are very popular and are well-suited for couples and for families.

The major cruise lines also offer longer voyages, with itineraries that span anywhere from three weeks to several months. Often these longer voyages provide opportunities to visit ports-of-call in several countries and sometimes more than one continent. Most of these longer itineraries are especially geared toward the affluent or retirees who have the time and financial freedom to be voyaging for weeks or months at a time.

Some cruise ships are referred to as “megaliners” and are so large that a person can actually get lost onboard. In fact, they are so large that they cannot even go through the Panama Canal. Cruises on megaliners can accommodate up to 2,000 passengers and provide a plethora of activities to keep passengers of all ages entertained and active. The mid-size ships are the most common and usually have up to 900 passengers, but still provide a nice variety of activities. The smaller ships are more intimate and usually accommodate less than 400 passengers.

There is also a class of cruise ships called “boutique ships,” which could be compared to luxury boutique hotels. They offer exceptional attention to service and usually have an even higher standard of gourmet food, which is saying something considering that these floating hotels are well-known for the quality and selection of fine foods.

The vast majority of cabins onboard ship are considered to be standard-size and are generally quite cozy, which helps encourage people to take advantage of the many amenities during their time aboard. Cabins with ocean views and verandas are very popular, but will cost more than an interior cabin. Many of the newer cruise ships are being designed so that virtually all of the cabins have at least a minimal exterior view and some even boast that every cabin has a veranda, albeit small ones. For cruisers with the cash, there are spacious suites, but the cost of these puts them well out of reach for the average person.

You can learn in-depth information about the available cruises that are of interest to you. There is no lack of information about all kinds of options that can readily be accessed online at the many travel websites, as many of these sites specialize in providing cruise travel information. Often there are discount cruise travel deals that you can locate through these sites and that can help you stretch your vacation budget.

You Can Take A Hawaii Island Cruise And Relax In A Very Special Manner

June 30th, 2009
Comments Off

If you are searching for a way to relax and to escape from the busy schedule then a Hawaii Island cruise can prove to be just what you want. Once you are on-board the cruise ship you will find that everything is well taken care of and in addition your Hawaii island cruise will offer you plenty by way of shore adventures as well as you get a chance to stop at some of the most amazing places that make up the Hawaii Islands.

Weather And The Scenery Are Exceptional Benefits Of Hawaii Island Cruise

A Hawaii island cruise offers two real benefits that you won’t find anywhere else in the world: the outstanding weather as well as the most spectacular scenery. What’s more, when it comes to picking a Hawaii island cruise you will be spoilt for choice and in fact you will have your hands full trying to pick one Hawaii island cruise option over the other; such is the level of competition among cruise operators.

The first and most important consideration that you will need to address before you pick a Hawaii island cruise is deciding on the amount of time that you have on your hands. The Hawaiian Islands are pretty big and they form a small but spectacular relief from the vast expanse of ocean that surrounds each island. You will need a lot of time to take in all that is on offer.

This very tiny but major span of land in the center of a huge ocean is one of the more persuasive causes that tells you that why you should choose to take a Hawaii Island cruise instead of choosing to fly to the Islands. Typically, you can find good Hawaii island cruise options that will set sail for Hawaii from Los Angeles and from San Diego and even from Mexico and which will last for between ten and fourteen days with many stops that will at least take you to two Hawaiian islands.

A Hawaii island cruise will of course mean having to spend quite a few numbers of days out on sea which means that before picking a deal you should ensure that you only travel on a cruise ship that has all the desired amenities to make your time worthwhile and trouble free. The bottom line is that a Hawaii island cruise offers you a really unique opportunity to relax and take in some of the most exotic locations that you can find on this planet.

Hawaii has a rich history and its people are very hospital and the culture is truly unique. It will come as quite a culture shock for Americans to visit their fiftieth state to see a life that is truly remarkable and different than what they would normally associate with the rest of America.

Runway Accident Caused By Silly Human Error

June 30th, 2009
Comments Off

An Emirates plane that recently tried taking off from Melbounre, Australia had its tail massively damaged when someone entered its incorrect weight into a take-off computer.

The weight of the plane was miscalculated by human error according to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which resulted in insufficient power being used to take off. The incident which happened on an Airbus a340 did not cause harm to any of the passengers but is still being investigated. Frustratingly determining the exact problems has been made difficult by the fact that much of the flight data recording equipment was damaged by the crash.

The plane had reached about three quarters of the way down the runway and was traveling at full take off speed. However, when the action was made to pull the nose into the air, nothing happened. Only after increasing the power and trying again the nose of the plane rose up but left the tail dragging along the ground. Along will a huge noise, a great deal of damage was caused to the plane and the runway was left with massive scars. Numerous runway obstruction light signs were wiped out and all the rear beacon lights on the plane were lost. The plane only managed to get airborne when the captain decided to hit full thrusters and he managed to keep it climbing. Before the plane turned around to land back in Melbourne it had to first dump its fuel in the sea to prevent any further issues when landing.

Modern planes are fitted with lots of different computer systems and have miles and miles of habia cable that can go wrong. However, director of aviation safety, Julian Walsh has stated that it seems human error was the primary cause.”nobody rechecked the flight information details after they were entered incorrectly first time round” said Walsh. He continued to praise the clear-thinking actions of both pilots, although both are no longer with the airline
